23 Sept 99 Saints-22 vs. Norfolk Academy-20-The game starts with Norfolk Academy (NA) receiving the ball on the 20-yd line-they fumble and recover. NA fails to make any yardage and is forced to punt. The Saints follow NA’s lead with a series of no yardage plays and is forced to punt. NA makes one 1st down out their series, Saints #7 Robert Crumpler makes an interception, but only one foot is in bounds. NA makes a few good first downs on a sweep and one complete pass. They fumble on the 4th and recover their own ball, but NSA stills gets the ball.
The 2nd quarter starts, score 0-0, and the Saints have the ball on the their 35-yd line. A few 1st downs are made by #41 LeGrande and #20 Ryan Moring. However, the Saints end up punting. NA fails to move the ball and is forced to punt. FB Matt Spencer, #42, runs up the middle for about a 30-yd gain. The next series of plays fail to go anywhere and Saints punt. NA receives the punt on about the 20-yd line and runs it down the field for a big TD. (NA-6/NSA-0…2 minutes left in the first half) Stretching like a rubber band, #20 Ryan Moring tips the ball from the NA’s receiver on the two point conversion attempt. NA kicks off and on the first play #30 John Tuttle makes a 15-yd gain. NA makes an interception with 30 seconds left in the first half. NA capitalizes on the turn-over with a short 25-yd run up the middle and scores. The 2 point conversion is made with a run up the middle. NA kicks off and the Saints run a couple of plays before the 2nd half is over with the score NSA-0/NA-14.
NA kicks off to the Saints to start the 3rd quarter. After a series of plays and incomplete passes, the ball is turned over to NA. NA fumbles the ball after a few plays and the Saints recover on their 30-yd line. With some key blocks, #41 LeGrande sweeps left and scores a TD. The two point conversion was incomplete –score NSA-6/NA-14. The Saints got down to about the 10 yard line and had two incomplete passes in the end zone that were no fault of QB Crumpler.
During the 4th quarter, there were several series of downs by both teams as NA is forced to punt and #71 Jordan Webb blocks the ball and #24 Matt Stublin recovers the ball on the 28-yd line. FB #42 Matt Spencer carries the ball down to the 8-yd line. FB Jamie Johnson #44 dives up the middle for the TD. Saints make the two point conversion with a complete pass…sorry didn’t get the numbers. Score 14 to 14! One minute left in the game. Saints kick off to NA and Saints defense holds them to 0-yds as the time runs out.
Over Time! Saints get the ball first on the 10-yard line. Sweeping left by #20 Ryan Moring gets the ball to the 1-yd line and LeGrande gets in another foot closer. With the ball on about a foot from the goal, #42 Matt Spencer dives in for the TD. The two point conversion was a pass by #7 QB Robert Crumpler to RB #30 John Tuttle and he passes to #12 Hod Verble in the end zone. NSA-22/NA14. However, it is now’s NA’s turn on the 10-yd line and they score on the first play with a pass in the end zone. Now here’s come the money play…..the game is decided on a single play. NA makes it – another over time - miss it – Saints win. The NA QB makes an attempt to hand off at the FB for a run up the middle, but the hole is plugged… they fumble the ball and recover but the game is over with the final score. NSA-22 and NA-20. As the sofa coach, I award the Hit of the Day to #7 Robert Crumpler and #20 Ryan Moring. They both nailed the NA ball carrier on the first series of plays. I'll ask Coach Blythe who he thinks would make the best MVP of the game. As one of the parents, I won't be a good judge....I am somewhat in favor of one player :)
29 Sept 99 Saints-36 vs. Christ Church-0-
Don’t judge a book by its cover is a saying I tell my TaeKwonDo students. The biggest and baddest looking opponent sometimes can’t fight a lick and sometimes the book worm looking opponent is tenacious as a tiger. When Christ Church jogged out onto the field, they were Big in size-but slow with the ball.
1st quarter Saints won the toss and receive the ball. The backs #44Legrande and #42 Spencer make several good runs with several first downs. After only 3 minute into the 1st quarter, #7 QB Crumpler passes from the Sharks 30-yd line into the in zone to #30 John Tuttle for the TD. The two point conversion is a pass from Curmpler to #25 JB Person. Saints kick-off to the Sharks and they start their down from their 30-yd line. With zip yardage, they line-up for a punt but go for a pass and is incomplete… 1st down Saints on the Sharks 37-yd line. #44 Matt Spencer carries it down to the 15-yd line on a sweep for a first down. #25 JB Person then runs it the end zone for another 6 points. Another 2 points is attempted from #7 QB Crumpler to #25 Person, but is incomplete. With 4:07 left in the first quarter-Score NSA 14-Sharks-0. Saints kick-off and the Sharks get ball to the 35-yd line. The Sharks get zero first downs and on a forth and 5, they fake another punt and run for the first. The Saints defense holds and stops the first down attempt. Saints ball on the Shark’s 43-yd line. #44 LeGrande gets to the 31-yd line for another 1st down. QB #7 Crumpler pitches out to FB #44 Matt Spencer who joggles the ball-fumbles and the Sharks recover the ball back on their 37-yd line.
2nd quarter- Once again the Sharks can’t move the ball and fake the punt and pass-incomplete-Saints ball on their 38-yd line. QB Crumpler gets sacked in the back field for about a 5-yd loss, the best play Christ Church has done thus far. #44 Legrande makes a another good run and first down, but the ball is brought back because of a hold. # 12 Hod Verble makes a good run but just short of the first and the Saints punt. Sharks receive the ball around the 20 and make a good return to the 43-yd line. Flags all over the field with penalties on both sides…ball stays on the 43-yd line. The Sharks finally get a first down at the 33-yd line. Sharks fake a punt and pass once again and this time they get the completion for a first down. They get one more first down and but again fake a punt and the their QB is sacked by #55 Nate Grover…Saints ball on the 45-yd line. The Sharks get two 5-yd penalties in a-row for off-sides. # 44 Legrande gets inches from the first down. So on the 4th down they exceute a half back pass to #44 Legrande and passes to #12 Verble that’s incomplete. Shark’s ball on their 29-yd line with 1:14 in the half. Sharks get another 5-yd penality..back to the 24 yd-line/3rd down 16 seconds in the half. They go for anther half-back pass and are stopped in the back-field by # 55 Grover…time out. Score at the end of the half-Saints 14/Sharks 0.
3rd Quarter-Saints kick-off to the Sharks to the 25-yd and return it to the 30-yd. The Sharks punt and the Saints fumble and recover on the Shark’s 47-yd line…1st down Saints. With some good blocking, #44 Legrande gets anther 1st down at the 34-yd line. The next run gets the ball to the 35-yd line and then #25 JB Person runs in for another 6 points. #20 Ryan Moring get the extra 2 points. Score is now 22 –0 / with 6:36 left I the 3rd quarter. Saints kick-off to the 20-yd line and the Sharks return it to the 27-yd line. #44 Jamie Johnson and #42 Spencer get the QB for a sack… Sharks have another 4th / 4 and go for it with a pass-intercepted by #12 Hob Verble-1st down Saints on the 47-yd line/4:40 left in the 3rd Qtr. With some great blocking and a good run by #20 Ryan Moring runs the ball to the 27-yd line. However the run is no good due to a offensive holding …5-yd penalty and the ball is brought back.. A complete pass by #7 Crumpler up the middle to #30 John Tuttle is good for another 1st down and off-sides by the Sharks for an additional 5-yds. With a series of runs and first downs the ball is run down to the 15-yd line. End of the 3rd quarter.
Fourth quarter- Saints ball on the Shark’s 15-yd line and QB #7 Robert Crumpler runs it for another 1st down to the 3-yd line. Pass from #7 Crumpler to #20 Moring for another 6 points. The two point conversion is a run and stopped short by inches…score 28-0/10:49 left in the game. Saints kick-off with a 5-yd return to their 35-yd line…1st down Sharks. Sharks fumble the ball and #55 Nate Grover swiftly grabs the ball. 1st down Saints on the Sharks 30-yd line. Saints failed to get the first down and Sharks take over on their 24-yd/5:10 left in the game. The Sharks fail at getting the first and the Saints get the ball at the 31-yd line/2:54 on the clock.. With a sweep to the outside #20 Ryan Moring makes in for another 6 points and with the same play he gets 2 more points…Saints 36-0/2:13 on the clock. Saints kick-off to the Shark and with a series of plays they get a first down with 20 seconds on the clock. With a few plays and zero yardage the clock expires and Saints win 36 and Christ Church 0.
As the "Sofa Coach", I select for the MVP Player of this game #7 Robert Crumpler for his passing. The Hit of the Day goes to #17 Austin Grant. On at least 3 plays he made some single-head on-hard hits.
6 Oct 99 Saints-12 vs. St. Christoper-29-This was truly a beautiful afternoon for a ball game. Sunny and cool. One couldn't ask for better conditions except for a nice box office seat and refreshments. For today’s game, the NSA Saints wore white uniforms and the numbers were different for a couple of players, so if I use the incorrect name and number, please e-mail me the correct info.
1st Quarter- Saints receive the ball and return to 28-yd line. The first series of plays have an off-sides by the Saints but on a 3rd and long get a first down on a complete pass and a long from #7 Crumpler to #12 Verble-1st down around St. Chris’s 20yd-line. On a 4th and 4 the Saints pass is knocked down…St. Chris’s ball on the their 16-yd line. For most of the first quarter, the ball went up and down the field with no score. The only other really good play besides the above pass was a run up the middle from St. Chris’s 36-yd line to their 13-yd line by FB #42 Matt Spencer. The defense did get one good sack in the backfield…it looked like the whole Saints team was in on the tackle.
2nd Quarter-St. Chris’s ball on their 11-yd line. On their series of downs they get 2 first downs and the Saints get another good sack by #30 John Tuttle. St. Chris is forced to punt and the Saints get to the 48-yd line of St. Chris. Saints with a series of only a few yards are forced to punt. St. Chirs start with a 1st down for St. Chris on their 20-yd line. Complete pass to the right side and the receiver is hit by a host of Saints and looses the ball..as it popped out, #10 Ahston Stephenson catches the ball off the back of the receiver and is tackled on St. Chris’s 20-yd line…1st down Saints with 3:36 left in the half. After a first down to the 7-yd line with a pass and sweep, #32 JB Person (his number for today’s game) runs up the middle for 6 points. The two point attempt is incomplete. St. Chris with the time ticking get one first down with a complete pass, however #12 Verble makes an interception for the Saints on their 48 yd-line with 3 seconds on the clock. The Saints run a left sweep with no results…..time is over for the 1st half…score NSA-6/ST.C-0.
3rd Quarter- St Chris receives the ball and with a series of 1st downs proceed to move the ball down the field from their 30-yd line, one that the Saints gave them from an off-sides. However, pressure from the line and St. Chris fumble and #35 (?) recovers it for the Saints on St. Chris’s 35-yd line with 5:35 left in the 3rd quarter. On a 2nd & 10, #44 Matt Spencer goes up the middle from the Saints 35-yd line to St. Chris’s 43-yd line. With no other first downs the Saints are forced to punt. St. Chris receives the ball on their 20-yd line and runs untouched down the side-line for a TD. Their 2 point conversion is good…St. Chris 8/NSA-6 with 2:40 in the third quarter. The two point play was a winner.. the entire OF line was on the right side…a pass went to left side to an awaiting lonely receiver and scored the 2 points. Saints receive the ball on the kick-off to the 25-yd line. With a series of only a few plays are forced to punt. St Chris is stopped several times up the middle by #44 Jamie Johnson and #71 Jordan Web, however on a outside sweep from about the 50-yd line…they run it for another 6 points. Their kick is good for anther point…score St. C-15/ NSA-6 with seconds left in the third quarter. St. Chris kicks off and the Saints will start on the 27-yd line. Time out.
4th Quarter- Saints are on their 29-yd and on a forth and long fumble (name & #???)and St. Chris recover on NSA’s 34-yd line. St. Chris makes a couple of first downs up the middle and finally run around the end for another TD. The kick is good for another point…St. Chris-22/ NSA-6 with 7:02 left in the game. Saints receiver #30 John Tuttle at the 15-yd line and runs up to the 49-yd line before he is swamped by St. Chris. NSA's #20 Ryan Moring makes a good run up the middle for about 6-yds…the next play #7 Robert Crumpler is forced to keep it and tries running up the middle for zero yards. On an outside sweep to #20 Ryan Moring fumbles the ball and St. Chris recovers the ball on their own 45-yd line with 5:16 in the game. St. Chris has a break up the middle and a shoe lace tackle by #20 Ryan Moring terminated what looked to be another TD. Another good run up the middle by St. Chris is stopped by #32 JB Person, but the following play they go in for another 6 points and the kick is good for one…St. Chris-29/ NSA-6 with 1:34 in the game. Saints receiver #32 JB Person fields the ball on the 10 and makes a good run to the Saints 39-yd line. On the following two plays #32 gets the ball down field for a Saints first down and one out of bounds to stop the clock. A half-back pass from QB Crumpler to RB Hod Verble passes to #2 for long TD pass for the Saints. The two point attempt is no good with 32 seconds on the clock…St. Chris-29/ NSA-12. The Saints do an off-side kick…but the ball is fielded and one play is completed by ST. Chris as the time expires. NSA-12/ St. Chris-29.
As the "sofa coach" selecting a MVP for the Saints in this game was close. Except for a couple of big mistakes, they played ST. Chris fairly well. I select #12 Hod Verble and the Saints MVP player for this game. The Hit of the Day goes to #10 Ashton Stephenson …Ashton was a little slow getting up-but good hit!
14 Oct 99 Saints-16 vs. Collegiate-30
4th Game- This is the last JV home game for this season. Some interesting historical notes: this is the first time that I have seen a female referee and even more so Collegiate has a female football player.
1st Quarter-Collegiate receives the ball on the kick-off and fumbles on their 15-yard line. Saints recover on Collegiate’s 20-yard line. However, the Saints don’t capitalize on the turn-over. With several runs and incomplete passes they are force to turn the ball over to Colligate. The Cougars get several first downs and score a TD and a two point conversion with 6:20 left in the first half. The Saints receive the ball and without any speak able results are forced to punt once again. With a bad punt, the Cougars get the ball and on the first play from the Saints 36-yd line, they roll to the left side and pitch out to the half-back…he fumbles the ball and it pops into #25 JB Person’s hand and sprints down the sideline 50-yards for a Saints TD! Pass from QB Crumpler to #82 Orman Upton get them 2 more points. Saints kick-off to Collegiate and they break the Saints attack and are stopped by #41 Keith LeGrand one foot from the goal line. The Cougars make and easy run to the right side and score a TD and make another two…16-8 in favor of Collegiate. The Saints get the ball and without any major gains are once again finding themselves punting…quarter over.
2nd Quarter-Collegiate with the ball on their own 36-yd line, make several runs and make a complete pass and a 50-yard run for a Cougars TD…the 2 point attempt is no good- score is 24 to 8. Saints get the ball and few yards are gained however a pass interception give the Cougars a turn-over on the Saints 20-yd line. After a couple of runs, the Cougars run it on the left side…the 2 point attempt is no good…score 30-8. The Saints get a couple of good runs, but are forced to give up the ball of the Cougars 40-yd line. The Cougars make a few plays, but time runs out in the 2nd quarter.
3rd Quarter- Saints receive the ball on the 20 and return it to the 35-yd line by #20 Moring. Once again after a series of only a few yards are forced to punt. The Cougars get the ball on their 45-yd line. The cougars turn the ball over to the Saints on the 50-yd line after a series of short gains. With a series of runs and first downs by JB, Spencer and Moring, they get down to the Cougars 14-yd line. With a some bad plays, the Saints are forced to give up the ball on the Cougars 26-yd line.
