Saints Overwhelmed in Opener
Before Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s game with North Carolina’s Mt. Zion Christian Academy, Saints coach Terry Crigger said he knew very little about the Warriors. But he did know they were "big and strong." And Crigger knew that even better after N-SA’s 36-6 loss to Mt. Zion Thursday night, as the Warriors were quite happy to provide four quarters of reinforcement. "We played a heck of a ball team," Crigger said. " They were much bigger, stronger and faster. "We gave them opportunities early and it was hard to overcome that."
Twice in the first quarter the Saints allowed the Warriors to start from deep in N-Sa territory and both times Mt. Zion was able to capitalize. The Saints looked like they could get back in it after the Warriors’ second score.
After a series if long passes by Matt Grandy, including a 25 yard hook-up with Spencer Hart, and several good runs by Chris Johnson, N-SA got the ball down to the Mt. Zion’s 7-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
The Saints finally got on the board midway through the fourth quarter on a 10-yard run by junior fullback William Slack. Despite the outcome, Crigger was not upset with his team. "I’m proud of the way the guys played", he said. "They were playing with guys 40 to 50 pounds bigger than them and they kept their nose in there the whole game."
